Environmental Design and Technology 2011

The Environmental Design and Technology (EDT) 2011 Curriculum is a program intended to help high-school students apply their science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) knowledge to real-world problems. Students learn about sustainable building practices through interactive exercises designed to reinforce understanding.

This curriculum is part of a new high-school course in Washington State. The industry-based, hands-on course focuses on 4 major themes:

  • The nature of sustainability
  • Technical methods, practices, and materials that support sustainability
  • Systems theory as it applies to the complex interrelationships among humans, the built environment, information management, and the natural world
  • The validity of ethics and values in the decision-making processes regarding energy management

Students also explore the basic principles of energy use, waste, water conservation, site selection, and construction technology, and they learn how these factors apply to the built environment. The course culminates in a design project, in which students analyze and design a green building of their own.
